Shark Trip Mossel Bay

Mossel Bay

Activity Description

East of Cape Town lies the enigmatic little town, or “Dorpie” of Mossel Bay. In years gone by its economy relied on farming, fishing and its little commercial harbour, but in 1995 a new and important contributor to the economy took up its role in the form of Shark Cage diving. Over the years since 1995, Mossel Bay, the lessor known of all shark cage diving areas, has proved to hold its own against the larger and better known areas.

Come dive with the sharks of Mossel Bay; Great Whites, Bronze Whalers and they have even had the odd Hammer Head Shark. The waters around the dive sites is between 18 and 23 degrees centigrade (67 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit) making the experience not only adrenaline filled, but pleasurable.

Come get up close and personal in the cage with these behemoths of the ocean and experience the grace and speed with which they slice through the water. Or if an eye to eye encounter is just a little more than you were bargaining for, enjoy them from the viewing deck. Whatever you do, book now to enjoy, learn and fall in love with these misjudged beauties of the ocean.

The trip from the dock to the shark site is only about ten minutes so there is no long and tedious boat ride. In fact, Mossel Bay is one of the most accessible white shark viewing sites in the world. The bay is also very protected so the sea conditions are normally very calm and comfortable. The crew will provide a briefing concerning the cage diving on the boat.

To find the sharks we have to bait and chum. The baits and chum are natural marine products. We do not use anything that is not natural to the sharks and the environment. It can take several minutes or several hours for the first shark to appear and while we enjoy a high success rate, you need to understand that nothing is guaranteed.

Once we have sharks at the boat, the cage will go into the water and the diving will begin. Topside viewing is exciting for the non-diver and as the shark works very close to the surface you will have plenty of opportunities to take some action shots.

A trip generally lasts for +- four hours and we offer a light lunch, snacks and drinks on the boat and there is plenty of opportunities to chat with our staff and ask questions. Upon return to the dock, we offer afternoon tea and hand out the certificate of the day to all our guests.
